Certain heavy-duty diesel engine oils can improve fuel economy by reducing frictional and pumping losses.  However, it is critical that the oils also provide the right level of protection to avoid engine wear.

Shell has been at the forefront of development of fuel economy lubricants.  Working in our laboratories and with leading companies and original equipment manufacturers, we have clearly demonstrated the benefits that a high quality fuel economy oil can bring.

Shell Rimula’s adaptive technology gives outstanding wear protection with reduced viscosity for improved fuel economy.

'E' is for Fuel Economy

With Shell Rimula’s heavy-duty diesel engine oils, the letter ‘E’ on the label stands for ‘Fuel Economy’. Here’s how our various ‘E’-labelled fuels have earned that title

Shell Rimula R6 LME

Developed in close co-operation with leading engine and vehicle makers, Shell Rimula R6 LME not only delivers fuel economy benefits, but also meets the durability and performance demands of the latest low-emissions equipment.

In trials carried out with a fleet of trucks operating for a leading UK supermarket, the customer confirmed that Shell Rimula R6 LME realised up to 2.0% fuel savings over a 100,000 km oil drain interval compared with a typical 10W-40 oil*. More about Shell Rimula R6 LME

Shell Rimula R5 E

The superior flow and frictional properties of Shell Rimula R5 E 10W-40 compared with a conventional SAE 15W-40 oil means that the oil can help improve fuel economy. Testing in laboratory simulations has shown that 10W-40 oils such as Shell Rimula R5 E can deliver over 1% fuel economy improvement. More about Shell Rimula R5 E.
