A history lesson you won’t fall asleep in. These videos showcase how Shell and Ferrari became the most successful racing partnership ever.

  • Circuit

This journey covers 5 countries, 4 continents and over 60 years of amazing technical partnership between Shell and Ferrari.

    Video Transcript

At first we simply hear, just before we see a beautiful blood red 1952 Ferrari F500 roaring down a spectacular looking tree lined road in Italy. We clearly witness the driver demonstrating his mastery of this fabulous machine as we approach and then enter Rome before passing by the Coliseum.

We now see the car take a sharp left hander. We cut and as we pick up the front of the car we notice two things have changed. Firstly the car is now a 1967 Ferrari 312 and secondly we're in New York.

We now witness this beautiful car sweeping through Times Square and Park Avenue.

The scene then moves to the car travelling along a deserted and wet coastal road.

When we pick up the front of the car, we discover we are now moving through the streets of Hong Kong and we're on board a staggeringly attractive 1970, Ferrari F312B.

The car now enters a tunnel and when we cut back to the car it has become a 1997 Ferrari F310B and it's moving rapidly along the road flanking Ipanema beach in Rio. In the background we see the famous Christ the Redeemer statue on top of the Corcovado mountain. The noise of the car stops people in their tracks.

As we cut back to the car we see it has delivered us into the Principality of Monaco and the car has become a 2003 Ferrari F2003GA. We clearly see the Ferrari enter the Principality before driving through it and out of it into the surrounding countryside.

Before long we cut to a drivers eye view as we approach a Shell petrol station in Italy now in a 2006 F1 Ferrari which pulls up to refuel, much to the surprise of the attendant who refuels the scarlet rocket with Shell V-Power.

Over 60 years ago we began to work with Ferrari. What we've learned from our shared passion on the track, we've put on the road.

We now see the same car pull out from the gas station and disappear in a screaming red blur. Very soon we see it sweep past the Coliseum once more, as we start our second world circuit.

Shell V-Power. Ferrari Fuel for the road.

We cut to the monolith sequence with the Shell pecten, Made to Move.

  • Circuit – The Making Of

Discover how the epic journey was made, including onboard cameras, a deserted New York, and a man who had the job of making the cars look dirty.

The people involved in the making of this TV commercial were professionally trained to drive and film in high speed action situations.

    Video Transcript

The screen opens with a globe of the world slowly spinning around and country names appear – Rome, Hong Kong, Rio, New York and Monte Carlo. An arrow traces this journey around the world. “Circuit, the making of”.

We now see lots of old Ferrari cars in different environments from the film shoot, including a tree-lined street and a Shell service station. Cameras and filming equipment is shown, as are Ferraro and Shell Formula One technicians. Everything is being meticulously placed and organised, even including retouching a driver’s helmet!

There are now two cameramen in front of the Coliseum and an old Ferrari drives past on old Italian roads. We see the car drive past with a camera hooked on the front carefully capturing all of the action.

We now see a Ferrari F312B being filmed from a moving car and the cameramen are carefully capturing all of the action. The car now drives down a street in Hong Kong and people are almost deafened by the noise of the car!

A helicopter takes off and we see a Ferrari 312 on a wet road, bringing up mist as it drives past. We see a Ferrari F310B driving down a street in Rio which then takes a corner on a busy main street filled with people. Crowds are amazed by the sights and sounds of the Ferrari car.

We are now in New York and see a Ferrari 312 being driven in New York. The streets are empty except the cars, the driver and the filming crew. The car drives down an empty Broadway onto Times Square. New York crowds are desperately trying to capture a glimpse of the amazing scenes.

Crowds of Shell and Ferrari technicians and the film director are carefully discussing the car can carefully drive around the windy streets of Monaco. The Ferrari F2003GA drives along the streets in front of the harbour.

We now see the F248 pull into a Shell service station where a pump attendant fills the car with Shell V-Power after being timed. The drive starts again, from the Coliseum.

We see the Shell Made to Move monolith.

  • Refuelling

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No…wait, yes! It’s a plane refuelling a Ferrari F1™ car – whilst moving.

    Video Transcript

In 1997, Shell once again pushed the boundaries of what was believed to be technically possible with a daring and impressive display deep in the Mojave Desert to celebrate the launch of Shell V-Power.

The clip begins as a multi-coloured blurred image with red as the predominant centre to the video. The bottom left reads, "Mojave Desert, USA 1997," which remains in that location throughout the clip.

The sound of a Ferrari intensifies gradually the camera focus clears and the front of a red Ferrari F1 car appears on screen driving straight at the viewer.

A quick succession of various camera angle shots shows the driver, in helmet, from multiple angles, ending with an aerial view of the Ferrari on a runway.

The screen cuts away to a blurred image in which the propellers of an aircraft can be seen in rotation. A pilot can be heard speaking into a radio.

The aircraft gradually comes into clear view as the Ferrari F1 car passes, at which point the viewer can clearly see the aircraft from the front.

The view shifts to the pilot in the cockpit as the plane descends upon the runway just above the Ferrari F1 car.

The aircraft descends behind the Ferrari as the pilot views the Ferrari on screen from the cockpit.

The view cuts to behind the Ferrari, and the aircraft flies over.

Maintaining a constant speed with the Ferrari the pilot pushes the control button releasing the refuelling nozzle. The refuelling pipe extends and reaches towards the Ferrari, finally attaching itself to the gas tank.

The screen cuts to a shot of the interior of the car and witnesses the petrol flowing in.

The video cuts back to show the aircraft connected to the Ferrari with the refuelling pipe travelling through the desert. The view shifts from side, to front, to back, and then back to the front as the propellers move in slow motion. During this, the music builds up and crescendos in the background.

The music continues as the video cuts to the Ferrari driver, and then to the pilot as the Ferrari advances and detaches from the refuelling aircraft.

The aircraft then flies over head as the view shifts to show the Shell pecten on the fin of the plane and then adjusts to show the pecten on the Ferrari F1 car.

The view again cuts to behind the Ferrari moving forward as the words, "Winning is the passion," appear.

The final shot shows the Shell aircraft flying away with the words, "the fuel is Shell." appearing on screen.

  • Refuelling - the film of the film

As you can imagine, refuelling a moving Ferrari Formula One car with a flying plane isn't easy. Filming it was just as difficult (but brilliant to watch).

The people involved in the making of this TV commercial were professionally trained to drive and film in high speed action situations.
