Shell FuelSave Diesel helped reduce the overall fuel consumption of my boat, it cleaned up my injector significantly, saving me time and cost of maintenance. I felt the engine ran smoother and with more power.
Shell FuelSave Diesel has been tested with the Fishing Boat “Cheung Hing No.3” for over 9 months. Watch the fishing boat story to learn about the trial, challenges faced by the fishermen and how Shell provided our professional technical support to help them thrive.
The Fishing Boat Story – Hang in There
Title: The Fishing Boat Story - Hang in There
Duration: 4:59 minutes
Hong Kong Fishing boat Owner, Mr. Wong Wan Hing, spoke about one of the challenges, rising fuel expense, that he faces recently in the fishing business. Shell and her Marine branded Reseller, Yee Lee, have conducted a fuel trial with Shell FuelSave Diesel on Mr. Wong’s boat and that could be a way to keep the fishing business thrive.

Mr. Wong Wan Hing Owner, Cheung Hing 3
Sound of Shell, upbeat
Mr. Wong: It is very challenging to run a fishing business, we can never predict the fish catch. We are facing recurrent expenditures like labour costs, tools and boat maintenance as well as unpredictable fish catch.
The biggest challenge to the fishing business in recent years is the rising fuel expense, which can be as much as 60 percent of the total operating cost. With the reduced amount of fish catch, all this puts a lot of burden on the business.

Mr. Lo Wai Tack, Owner, Yee Lee Limited Company
Mr. Lo: I am Tack, the owner of Yee Lee Limited Company. It was difficult to run the fishing business in recent years. Fuel expense makes up a large portion of the total cost of running a fishing boat. The boats all want to lower the cost on fuel.
A while ago I attended a Shell Conference on diesel and learned that they are now offering their latest Shell FuelSave Diesel for vehicles. I was interested in this topic and therefore discussed with Shell whether it can be applied to fishing boats as well. If it proves to be effective, we can help fishermen to reduce the fishing boat expenses.

Mr Paul Lo on Cheung Hing 3
Mr. Paul Lo, Technical Support Engineer, Yee Lee Limited Company
Paul: My name is Paul, I started working in Yee Lee for boat engineering and maintenance when I was in my 20s.
Paul and his mechanics extracting the injectors, and together with Shell professional inspecting the engine pistons with boroscope in the engine room
Paul: To me, this fuel trial is an innovative idea. The purpose of the trial was to compare the performance of Shell FuelSave Diesel and Shell Rimula R6 LM engine oil with regular diesel and regular lubricant used on fishing boats.
The most important aspect of this trial was to design a fair and objective comparison, as fuel consumption of fishing boats will be affected by uncertainties such as boat speed, amount of fish catches and wind direction. In this trial, Cheung Hing No. 3 was operated by two engines at the same time, so we basically tested one with Shell FuelSave Diesel and Rimula R6 LM, and the other one with regular diesel and regular lubricant. Each engine was connected to an electronic flowmeter to measure the fuel consumption.
Introducing DYNAFLEX Technology
Shell professional inspecting the injector through microscope and explaining to Mr. Wong and Mr. Lo
Paul: Through microscopic inspection, the Shell technical specialist observed that after the nine-month trial;
A photo of Injector condition that used Regular diesel and a photo of injector condition that used Shell FuelSave Diesel
Paul: the carbon deposits that were originally present on the injectors have been removed by Shell FuelSave Diesel’s active cleaning action.
Injector inspection and piston inspection on fishing boat
Paul: Shell FuelSave Diesel indeed helps promote more efficient combustion and therefore improve fuel efficiency.
Demonstrating up to 4.7% Fuel economy* from Shell FuelSave Diesel and premium lubricants used together. *Compared to regular diesel without fuel economy formula and to standard lubricant. Based on demonstration tests with fishing boat equipped with 19 years old engines in Hong Kong.
Paul: With the introduction of Shell FuelSave Diesel and Shell Rimula R6 LM, the result was a combined fuel economy of up to 4.7%.

Mr. Wong: Shell and Yee Lee supplied me with Shell FuelSave Diesel which helped to reduce fuel consumption.
SFSD benefit list (Better fuel economy1, Clean-up of deposits, Lower CO2 emissions and black smoke2, More torque, Lower Total Cost of Ownership)
1. Shell FuelSave Diesel is designed to help provide by up to 3% fuel economy, compared to regular diesel without fuel economy formula. Actual savings may vary according to fishing boat, operating conditions and operation style. Internal Shell tests and tests conducted with customers have shown a range of fuel savings depending on age of fishing boat and type of operations. 2. In heavy-duty engines up to and including Euro III.
Mr. Wong: It significantly cleaned up the injectors from carbon deposits, there was less black smoke emissions, the boat ran more smoothly than before. This new fuel can help reduce maintenance frequency and cost for the boat. Since my boat is already 19 years old, I expected to see slight improvement only but was surprised with such a huge benefit.
Mr. Wong look over the harbor and the fish market
Mr. Wong: I have witnessed many ups and downs after all these years. The fishing industry is stranding at low tide now, we just need to continuously seek for improvement. Finding the right partners is the key to lower the cost. Only if we have the heart and strong belief to thrive, we will overcome the difficult times one day.
