Pilot on Cleaner Low-Sulphur fuel
Mar 21, 2013
Shell Hong Kong Limited announced today a pioneering pilot programme on a cleaner low-sulphur fuel in support of government’s plans to reduce ship emissions in Hong Kong’s waters.
Shell has developed a new batch oflow-sulphur fuel with sulphur content as low as 0.05%, or 90% lower than the current standard. Designed to contribute to better air quality by lowering pollutant emissions, the two-week pilot programme targets the shipping industry and has received positive response from the reseller.
Accompanied by Ms Joanna Chow, General Manager - Commercial of Shell Hong Kong, representatives from the Environmental Protection Department and the reseller, Mr Lo Wai-tack of Yee Lee Co. Ltd., today inspected the delivery and sampling process of the upgraded product during a visit to Shell’s Tsing Yi Depot.
“Shell works continuously to improve products and service quality, and throughout the years we have been striving to offer cleaner and more efficient fuels. We have been actively communicating with the government and the marine and auto industries in pursuit of innovative and feasible solutions to support sustainable development,” said Joanna.
“The new pilot programme is our response to the government’s policy on reducing shipping emissions and future demand from the marine industry. We believe that by developing an upgraded product that meets specific industry needs, and by offering it as early as possible, we can help the industry better prepare for the future. We will decide on our next move, depending on the market response to the new product,” added Joanna.

The Environmental Protection Department welcomed the launch of Shell’s pilot programme. The reduction of marine emissions is vital to the improvement of Hong Kong’s air quality. The government encourages early adoption of cleaner low-sulphur fuels and sharing of experience by the shipping industry to promote wider use of the new product.
Mr Lo Wai-tack, owner of Yee Lee Co. Ltd., said, “Shell’s forward-looking initiative can meet industry demand for cleaner low-sulphur diesels. The pilot programme is expected to be well-received by local shipping operators as it will help the marine industry to better understand the performance of the new product.”
