Shell Hong Kong Limited recognised with BEAM Plus Gold Interiors rating for Siu Lam station
Mar 04, 2019
Shell Hong Kong Limited (“Shell”) has passed a new landmark in its sustainability journey, achieving a Gold rating under BEAM Plus Interiors (V1.0) certification for its Siu Lam station.
BEAM Plus is Hong Kong’s leading initiative to offer independent assessments of building sustainability performance. It provides building users with a single performance label that demonstrates the overall quality of the building. This certification demonstrates Shell’s highest standards of leadership in creating safer, healthier, more comfortable, more functional and more energy-efficient buildings.
Shell’s Siu Lam station opened in February 2018, introducing innovative elements from the start. By adopting integrative energy management system such as motion-activated air conditioning and electricity consumption monitoring systems, the station saves 30% more energy than normal constructions. More than 60% of building material contains recycled content including the walkway for customers and pedestrians which is paved with rubberised blocks upcycled from used tyre rubber. These building materials are manufactured regionally to reduce carbon footprint for logistics.
These features supported the station to receive the BEAM Plus Gold rating in February 2019. Ms. Anne Yu, Retail General Manager of Shell Hong Kong Limited said, “Shell is dedicated to setting the benchmark for sustainable, socially responsible operations. Our Siu Lam station was purposefully designed to showcase Shell’s determination to develop with innovation and care for the surrounding community and environment. With this new BEAM Plus Gold rating in hand, we will continue to place strong efforts on being a pioneer in promoting and practicing sustainable development.”
To make the environment greener and help reducing carbon emission, Shell also made the ground-breaking move to install a 12-square-metre green wall. Amongst other green building attributes, Siu Lam station is equipped with recycling bins, a collection box for rechargeable batteries and a self-serve water machine to encourage the use of reusable bottles and cups.
As an alignment to the Group’s commitment to help build a sustainable energy future, the Shell Group announced its ambition to halve the net carbon footprint of its energy projects by 2050. Innovative approaches to achieve this goal include bringing in more biofuels, hydrogen and electric vehicle charging into the mix as one of the world’s largest blenders and distributors of biofuels across the globe.
Across Hong Kong, Shell has also established a firm reputation as a leader in environmentally friendly activities. Shell has installed Reverse Vending Machine at Shell Select stores since 2018, in support of its green vision. Customers can use the machines to recycle their single-use plastic bottles and receive a HK$2 e-voucher for every bottle, good on spending of HK$20 and up at designated Shell Select stores. The first installation phase is now complete at 5 stations, including CityOne, Airport Passenger and Quarry Bay stations, with more Reverse Vending Machines coming soon to 3 other stations in 2019.
