Shell Launches Renewable Diesel and Renewable Diesel Blend R33 to Support Hong Kong’s Low-Carbon Future
Hong Kong — Shell Hong Kong Limited has officially launched Shell Renewable Diesel and Shell Renewable Diesel Blend R33 in Hong Kong, offering local businesses and commercial fleets a new low-carbon fuel option to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support the city’s journey toward carbon neutrality.

Shell’s purpose is to power progress together, by working with each other, our customers and our partners. Our strategy is to deliver more value with less emissions. As one of the world’s largest suppliers of biofuels, Shell has been actively promoting the use of renewable diesel as a practical, lower-emission energy solution.
Shell is the first energy company to introduce renewable diesel for commercial use in Hong Kong. Shell Renewable Diesel is a high-quality Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) made with 100% renewable bio-components such as corn, sugar, vegetable oils, or waste feedstocks through hydrogenation (treatment with hydrogen). Compared to EN590 B0 diesel2 , HVO can reduce up to 90% less CO2e1 emissions on a life cycle basis³. Fully compatible with existing diesel engines, Shell Renewable Diesel requires no engine modifications or additional equipment investment, making it an ideal low-carbon alternative for commercial users looking to reduce emissions without increasing capital costs.
“The launch of Shell Renewable Diesel marks a significant milestone in our energy transition journey in Hong Kong,” said Ms. Anne Yu, Managing Director of Shell Hong Kong Limited. “Through innovative fuel solutions, we aim to help our customers achieve their decarbonisation goals without compromising performance or increasing capital expenditure.”
Shell will also introduce Shell Renewable Diesel Blend R33 (Shell R33 Diesel) at Tsing Yi station, offering commercial fleets a more efficient low-carbon fuel. Shell R33 Diesel contains up to 33% renewable content, meets the EN590 standard, and can reduce CO2e emissions by up to 30%3. This product will be made available at retail fuel stations for the first time.
Alliance Construction Materials Ltd has been using B5 biodiesel at Shell stations since 2016 and is set to become the first fleet in Hong Kong to adopt Shell R33 Diesel. Mr. Wu Siu Kei, Head of Environment, Social and Governance at Alliance, said, "We are committed to minimizing the environmental impact of our operations. Adopting Shell R33 Diesel not only helps us significantly reduce carbon emissions but also aligns with our long-term sustainability goals. This transition is not just a technological upgrade—it’s a reflection of our corporate responsibility."
Shell Renewable Diesel has already been widely adopted in markets such as Europe and Canada, receiving positive feedback. Its introduction to the Hong Kong market supports the city’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and demonstrates Shell’s long-term commitment to sustainability.
Product Information
Shell Renewable Diesel is considered a renewable energy source, made with 100% renewable bio-components such as corn, sugar, vegetable oils, or waste feedstocks through hydrogenation (treatment with hydrogen) with up to 90% less CO2e1 emissions compared to EN590 B0 diesel2 on a life cycle basis3.
Drop-in Fuel4
Shell Renewable Diesel can be used as a direct replacement for B0 diesel fuels without the need for modifications to engines approved to use EN 15940 fuel. (check vehicle handbook/ diesel fuel cap).
Cleaner Burning5
It is a cleaner combustion fuel reducing air pollutants in the exhaust gas of diesel engines due to reduced emissions of regulated pollutants nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), and unburnt hydrocarbons (HC).6
Lower Engine Noise7
Shell Renewable Diesel can reduce noise levels in some engines compared to EN590 B0 diesel due to its higher cetane number.
Cold Start: Excellent Low Temperature Combustion Performance8
The high cetane number of Shell Renewable Diesel allows for an easier start-up of diesel engines at low temperatures compared to EN590 B0 diesel. This is particularly important in cold climate conditions or starting the engine in the morning after a cold winter night.
Improved Fuel Storage Performance
Shell Renewable Diesel can help to reduce the risk of microbial growth.9
Disclaimers
1Between 80%-90% CO2e. CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) includes CO2, CH4, N2O emissions.
2The reduced CO2e emissions are calculated by comparing to a GHG baseline intensity of 92 g CO2e /MJ on a Well-to-Wheel basis, representative of a EN590 B0 diesel. The carbon intensity of the EN590 B0 diesel is calculated by Shell using emission factors from the JEC Well-to-Tank report v5 and Shell internal studies. 3The life-cycle assessment of a product's CO2e emissions includes emissions associated with feedstock production, feedstock transport, fuel production, fuel transportation and distribution, and combustion.
4When switching from diesel. Based on Shell’s operability studies and market experience to date. Vehicle handbook and/or label at the fuel tank socket must be checked for OEM approval. Not applicable for passenger cars.
5The full life-cycle assessment of a product’s green house gas emissions includes emissions associated with feedstock production, feedstock transport, fuel production, fuel transportation and distribution as well as end use and/or combustion.
6Actual effects and benefits may vary according to vehicle type, vehicle condition and driving style. Compared to EN590 B0 diesel. Not applicable for passenger cars. The tailpipe out emission benefit can be limited for vehicles with advanced exhaust aftertreatment systems.
7Actual effects and benefits may vary according to vehicle type, vehicle condition and driving style. Compared to EN590 B0 diesel. Not applicable for passenger cars.
8Amount of improvement depends on engine type and ambient conditions. Compared to EN590 B0 diesel. Not applicable for passenger cars.
9Applied to 100% HEFA only without any FAME blended in. Compared to B5 diesel.
